Be Mayurbhanj’s guest, not its loud neighbour

Mayurbhanj — especially Similipal and its tribal villages — thrives on quiet, respectful visitors. Two simple rules will carry you well: leave no trace and ask before photographing. Travelling slow and respecting ritual spaces is the surest way to a richer journey.

  • Zero plastic in forest zones
  • Always ask before photographing
  • Buy crafts directly from artisans
  • Stay on marked trails
Packing list

What to pack

Essentials for the jungle

  • Quick-dry full-sleeves shirts & trousers (2 sets).
  • Sturdy hiking shoes with grip — barefoot is risky on mossy trails.
  • Rain jacket / poncho — heavy showers still surprise in October-November.
  • Insect repellent (DEET 20–30%), sunscreen, cap.
  • Reusable water bottle — no plastic inside the reserve.
  • Power bank — network is patchy inside nature camps.
  • Binoculars for bird watching & wildlife.
  • Lightweight torch — power cuts happen.

For cultural & village visits

  • Modest clothing — shoulders & knees covered in temples & villages.
  • Easy-off footwear — most temples require removal.
  • A small notebook — handy for tribal-language greetings and what your guide says.
  • Cash in small denominations — ATMs are sparse outside Baripada.
  • Basic first-aid kit — ORS, paracetamol, bandages.
  • Pre-printed offline maps — but rely on registered local guides.
